The Week (the Month, the Year...) That Was (But We Mostly Wish They Weren't)

For the week, month, and almost year-to-date ending Sept 26, 2025

A weekly roundup of the highlights, and lowlights, of campus antizionism and antisemitism.

I’m your host, Andrew Pessin. For more about me and my work, visit www.andrewpessin.com. For all the details on this week’s stories, and loads more stories, follow me on X: @AndrewPessin.

Each week I mention that I’m offering just a (small) selection of the available stories for the week. Just to make sure we’re all aware of the scope of the situation, this week I’ll post my lists going back to about August 1, so you can see what we’re dealing with. Keep in mind that these weeks include some 4-5 summer weeks, when things are a bit slower for campus affairs. I expect things will be ramping up significantly as we hit the two year anniversary of the Oct 7 massacre.

Sit back, grab a beer or brew, and relax, because here, in all its glory, it is:

Columbia: Jewish students employed as graduate workers by Columbia University have filed a federal complaint against their campus labor union — Student Workers of Columbia, an affiliate of United Auto Workers (UAW) — alleging that its bosses devote more energy and resources to pursuing “radical policy proposals” than improving occupational conditions. The National Right to Work Foundation (NRTW), a nonprofit organization which fights for worker mobility and freedom of representation that is providing the students legal counsel free of charge, announced the action on Monday. In a release shared with The Algemeiner, it said the students, who have formed the advocacy group Graduate Researchers Against Discrimination and Suppression (GRADS), are subjected to abuses which magnify problems inherent in compulsory union membership — chiefly that they may be forced to accept as representatives of their interests union bosses who act in “bad faith” and hold offensive beliefs.

At Columbia University, this issue has manifested in UAW’s unrelenting effort to inveigle school officials into adopting the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel and other measures, including abolishing relationships with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and Tel Aviv University. “These and similar actions constitute bad faith bargaining … and violate the duty of fair representation that respondent union owes to all represented graduate students,” state the charges, which GRAFS filed at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

In a landmark ruling, a California court has decreed that Jewish public school students and their parents can

sue their school district for allowing the use of biased, hostile antisemitic materials in the classroom.

Particularly since Hamas’s October 7, 2023 atrocities in Israel, “Jewish parents have been waging battle

against antisemitic “instructional materials” and instructors that expose their children to harm and hatred,”

said Lori Lowenthal Marcus, the legal director for The Deborah Project (“TDP”), a public interest law firm

that represents Jews facing discrimination in education. “This is the first judicial decision addressing claims

that the use of biased material violates the law. Now it’s clear: indoctrinating kids that Jews are evil

oppressors discriminates against Jews; districts can be held to account and forced to stop doing it.”

This breakthrough ruling was issued in a lawsuit brought by The Deborah Project against the Berkeley

Unified School District (“BUSD”) on behalf of a minor student, A.F. It seeks to bar the use of unvetted,

discriminatory and false materials about the history of the Middle East and the current conflict between the

terrorist government of Gaza and its ideological allies, and the Jewish State of Israel. The Superior Court of

California, Alameda County—ground zero for so much of the antisemitic and anti-Western instructional

materials inflicted on public schoolchildren in Berkeley, throughout California, and across the U.S.—found

that BUSD, its administrators and agents had a legal duty to allow parents see the materials being used, and

that “the very teaching of those materials” can alone constitute illegal discrimination

Philadelphia school district: nearly two years after parents and community members first sounded the alarm about Ismael Jimenez, Director of Social Studies Curriculum, he remains in his position -- continuing to poison this District with antisemitic, hateful, and violent rhetoric. The latest example is appalling even by Jimenez’s own standards: he posted a video clip depicting a neo-Nazi speaking before towering images of Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders, using this to liken the assassination of Charlie Kirk to Nazi martyrdom. This is not an abstract reference. It is Nazi propaganda imagery, deliberately invoked to mock Kirk’s murder and to trivialize the Holocaust. That a senior curriculum director would think it acceptable to share Nazi imagery in connection with the real-world assassination of an American citizen is indefensible. And yet, this is fully consistent with Jimenez’s long and disturbing pattern. The District has tolerated his repeated promotion of antisemitism, his open glorification of violence, and his demeaning of Jewish pain. By doing nothing, you have emboldened him.

UC Berkeley/Northwestern: Casey Goonan - member of the “Free Palestine” cult - has been sentenced to nearly twenty years in prison after setting a UC Berkeley. police car on fire as well as attempts on several federal buildings. Goonan acknowledged these attacks were inspired by Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel and he called on others to attack property on Bay Area college campuses in support of “Palestine”. Goonan graduated from Northwestern University in 2022 with a doctorate in African American studies and is described in online bios as a “scholar-activist” and “abolitionist.” Goonan’s writings describe the United States as a “god-awful fascist hell hole” where social injustices are “concealed under the blinders of white supremacist American reason.”

U of Massachusetts Amherst: Chanting “shame” and “shut it down,” as well as pounding on the walls inside the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, student activists on Monday demanded that Raytheon Technologies and similar defense industry contractors be banned from campus due to what they claim is their role in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The hourlong action by about 25 students involved with the campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine began on the Haigis Mall and then extended into Isenberg’s business innovation hub, where a Palestinian flag was hung on the door to the Irwin M. “Mike” and Rona Chase Career Center, with another draped over a nearby staircase. The students issued a series of demands, including that Raytheon be prohibited from participating in upcoming career fairs.

Canada, Toronto Metropolitan U: SJP organized a walkout at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) to oppose the treatment of a reported pro-Palestinian protester by an on-campus security guard. Video of the alleged incident that occurred last Friday shows the student allegedly being lifted and slammed to the floor, while another guard assists in pinning her down while she’s being handcuffed. The person arrested by TMU security was one of several individuals who were asked to leave the Dais Democracy Forum event by security due to “disruptive behaviour. One person was arrested at the walkout for criminal harassment.

Canada, Concordia U: Almost a year after the Concordia University student strike for Palestine in November 2024, the Fine Arts Student Alliance (FASA) has officially become the first student association at the university to vote for a strike for Palestine this fall. The strike is set to happen from Oct. 6 to Oct. 7, with FASA students voting 53 in favour to 1 at the association’s general assembly (GA) on Sept. 23.

France: Historians Withdraw from Jewish History Colloquium in Paris over Israeli Participation

Five academics withdrew their participation from a Colloquium on the History of French Jews at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme (MAHJ) in Paris because of the war in Gaza. The museum deplored this argument as an “unprecedented boycott.” The Colloquium, “Jewish Histories of Paris (Middle Ages and Modern Era),” took place on September 15-16, 2025. The Colloquium intended to bring together 25 French and Israeli historians. One of the intended participants was a doctoral student from the Department of Medieval History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The five researchers who declined to participate cited the fact that the Hebrew University of Jerusalem funded the student. Some researchers argued that participation in the Colloquium ”amounted to support for the Israeli government.” Others referred to the war in Gaza to question the organizational involvement.

Scotland: A student who was slashed in the face at a pro-Palestine demonstration claimed university security staff knew his attacker was carrying a knife and failed to intervene. Ben Law was assaulted by Thomas McKenzie at George Square in Edinburgh earlier this year. McKenzie shouted racist slurs and performed Nazi salutes towards the crowd before he was challenged about his behaviour. The 37-year-old then pulled a “box cutter” blade from his pocket and slashed Mr Law across the face. Earlier today, McKenzie was jailed for 22 months for the attack at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

New Zealand: Victoria University of Wellington’s Academic Board has overwhelmingly voted to endorse SJP campaign of boycott, divestment and other non-violent means to pressure Israel to comply with international humanitarian law and respect Palestinian human rights. Hundreds of students and staff poured into the Hunter Council Chambers in solidarity with Palestine. The motion directs the University to sever ties and not build future ones with institutions complicit in Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights and breaches of international humanitarian law. This includes any research and academic collaborations with institutions known to be involved in military technologies or doctrines.

Harvard: President Donald Trump’s administration escalated its campaign against Harvard University on Friday, placing new restrictions on the Ivy League school’s ability to access federal funds for student aid, citing concerns about the “financial position” of the oldest and richest university in the United States. The Department of Education said it had placed Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Harvard on “heightened cash monitoring” status, a shift from the typical practice that will force it to use its own funds to disburse federal student aid before drawing down funds from the department. The Education Department is also seeking to have Harvard post a letter of credit for $36 million to ensure its financial obligations are met.

MIT: Brandeis Center submits amended complaint to ongoing antisemitism lawsuit there bringing forth a new victim of antisemitism there: A Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher endured anti-Semitic harassment for months until he was ultimately fired “because he is Jewish and Israeli,” according to a lawsuit against the elite university. During the fall 2024 semester, students working alongside the Israeli postdoctoral associate, referred to in the complaint as “John Doe,” “began tormenting and shunning him based on his Jewish and Israeli identity,” and treated him “like a pariah, spewing anti-Semitic slurs and refusing to acknowledge his presence,” according to the complaint filed Wednesday. Doe’s supervising professor never intervened. Instead, he “repeatedly vilified [Doe] in front of students for being Israeli and Jewish,” kicked him out of the lab, gave him menial tasks, and eventually terminated his contract. A new crop of students joined Doe’s research lab in fall 2024 and quickly began harassing him for being Jewish and Israeli. “Students spoke of creating a covert plan to destroy his relationship with his Jewish partner to prevent more Jewish babies,” made remarks like, “Zionists control the world,” and introduced him as “a postdoc from Palestine,” the suit alleges. One student, according to the suit, “collected data on Jews and Israelis on campus,” maintained a list with their personal information, and grilled Doe about other Jews at MIT. She also asked if Doe’s wife was Jewish before adding, “Her nose looks Jewish so she is probably Jewish.”

Doe’s supervising professor, meanwhile, told the entire research group Doe was “an example of someone who cannot see the suffering of Palestinians,” In November 2024, the professor announced he would be terminating Doe’s contract. He later said students had told him they couldn’t stand the presence of “his kind” in the lab and admitted it was because Doe was Jewish.

Ohio State U: The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio is suing Ohio State University after a student who posted statements on social media about Israel and Palestine was removed from the school. The ACLU alleges that the First Amendment rights of Guy Christensen, a pro-Palestinian social media figure, were violated and that he was engaging in “protected political speech.” In May 2025, Christensen posted videos to social media recanting a previous condemnation of the shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C. and “forcefully and graphically” denouncing Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York for his “support for Zionism and associations with pro-Israel political entities.” Christensen said that the shooting victims were “war criminals,” and targeted for Zionism, not because of their Jewish identities, according to the lawsuit.

Canada, Concordia U: university distances itself from student handbook filled with anti-Israel propaganda, In an email to The Suburban, Concordia University spokesperson Vannina Maestracci wrote “the CSU is an independent student association, funded by student fee levies, which under Quebec law acts entirely independently from the university, so you would need to talk to the CSU itself about this.” When asked if the university would distance itself from the CSU, given that it represents the student body, and that its actions reflect badly on the university, Maestracci answered yes.

France: students at Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris created a group chat on Instagram that excluded several students, accusing them of being Zionists based on their Jewish-sounding names or surnames, French media reported. “If there are any other Zionists in this group besides those I’ve already kicked out, leave now — we don’t want you here,” wrote one of the students who created the group, placing a Palestinian flag in the middle. This latest antisemitic incident follows a similar episode last month, when a student created a poll in a WhatsApp group chat titled, “For or Against Jews?”

Italy, U of Pisa: University of Pisa, where dozens of pro-Palestinian activists stormed a lecture by Professor Rino Casella, whom they had branded a “Zionist.” The group disrupted the class, waved Palestinian flags, and shouted insults at Israel and those cooperating with it. When one of Casella’s students tried to push the protesters out, he was assaulted. Casella, who had initially tried to endure the disruption in silence, stepped in and was also beaten after being threatened for several minutes. He was later taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with head injuries and bruises on his arm. He believes he was targeted because he criticized the university’s recent decision to cut all ties with Israel. Flyers circulated against him in recent days described him as a “Zionist.” Casella stressed that he is not Jewish, but simply refusing to denounce Israel was enough for activists to accuse him of “genocide.”

Italy, Polytechnic University of Turin: where Israeli Professor Pini Zorea of the Braude College of Engineering in Karmiel was invited to teach a course. Protesters disrupted his lecture, accusing him of supporting Israeli “apartheid” through facial recognition technology. Zorea, filmed during the incident, tried to respond calmly. The discussion shifted to military issues, and he acknowledged having served in the Israel Defense Forces years ago, describing the IDF as “the purest army in the world.” The remark sparked uproar, and he was accused of justifying violence. To chants of “Free Palestine,” he replied that he too wanted to see Palestine free—but “free of Hamas.”

After learning of the exchange, the university rector, Stefano Cornietti, suspended Zorea. “As soon as I heard these unacceptable statements, I immediately ended the cooperation with the lecturer,” Cornietti said. “The Polytechnic has always strongly condemned all acts of violence in this war and protested against the ongoing slaughter of civilians in Gaza.”

Princeton: The Princeton Police Department has stepped up patrols of the town’s Jewish Center on Nassau Street. The shift comes in the wake of half a dozen reported incidents of graffiti around town beginning in mid-August that are being investigated as “bias intimidation incidents.”

The first incidents of graffiti were both reported on Aug. 15 in two separate public parks — one on Mountain Avenue and one on Snowden Lane. The former involved the defacement of two buildings which read “Death to the IDF,” referring to the Israel Defense Forces; “Global Intifada;” and “Feed Gaza.” In the latter, statements expressing similar sentiments — “Death to the IDF! Global Intifada” and “From the River to the Sea” — were painted in white on restroom doors.

ADL-World Union of Jewish students survey: The vast majority of Jewish students around the world resort to hiding their Jewishness and support for Israel on university campuses to avoid becoming victims of antisemitism, according to a new survey conducted by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS). A striking 78 percent of Jewish students have opted to “conceal” their religious affiliation “at least once” over the past year, the study found, with Jewish women being more likely than men to do so. Meanwhile, 81 percent of those surveyed hid their support for Zionism

George Washington U: Students for Justice in Palestine chapter is promoting an interview with convicted terrorist Georges Ibrahim Abdallah. Abdallah, leader of the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions, was convicted in France for: -Complicity in the 1982 assassinations of U.S. Army Lt. Col. Charles R. Ray and Israeli diplomat Yacov Bar-Simantov in Paris. -Involvement in the 1984 attempted assassination of U.S. Consul General Robert O. Academic Engagement Network: Holds ‘Antisemitism Symposium’ in Washington, DC for College Administrators, College administrators from across the US will amass in Washington, DC, this week for a three-day symposium on combating campus antisemitism, a sign of growing recognition that anti-Jewish hatred threatens not only Jewish students but all of higher education. The event will be attended by administrators representing dozens of institutions such as Harvard University, Barnard College, and George Washington University,

Deerfield high school (IL): A teacher at Deerfield High School used her social media — accounts followed by many of her students — to spread anti-Israel propaganda. She tied her identity as a teacher to those accounts, blurring the line between private opinion and professional authority. Parents spoke out. Students spoke out. Yet there was no discipline. Instead, she filed a lawsuit claiming her posts were “protected speech.” And now, the District 113 Board of Education is preparing to quietly settle — paying her with your tax dollars and hiding the fact a settlement even happened. Think about what that means. In one of the most Jewish school districts in America, a teacher may walk away with a paycheck for vilifying Israel — and by extension, Jewish families and students. The bill gets handed to you.

California state legislature passes controversial bill to fight antisemitism in K-12: During the process of negotiating AB 715, the California Teachers Association (CTA) emerged as a major obstacle and repeatedly acted in bad faith. The Queens College event — which was happening over Zoom — was abruptly interrupted by what appeared to be a group of attendees who turned on their cameras and microphones and began yelling slurs, including “kill all the Jews” and “go back to Auschwitz.” Instead of faces on the screen, pornographic and disturbing images appeared, including pictures of dead bodies and video clips of male masturbation.

New York University NYU: Campus Safety is “vigorously” investigating the defacement of a Weinstein Hall door “with antisemitic graffiti” that took place Tuesday night, President Linda Mills and Campus Safety head Fountain Walker said in a universitywide memo Wednesday morning. Walker and Mills said that the university is “providing support to the victim” and has cleared the graffiti from the door. NYU’s Title VI Coordinator’s Office and the New York City Police Department are investigating the incident, which they called “a terrible violation of our community’s rules and norms.” This marks the second publicly addressed perpetration against Jewish students since the academic year has ramped up. On Aug. 31, a student’s mezuzah was stolen from their Weinstein Hall dorm door. “The targeting of a Jewish student is inexcusable raw hatred,” the administrators said in the memo. “NYU has a zero-tolerance policy towards antisemitism and other forms of hatred.”

Union antisemitism running rampant on campuses: Experts told the US Congress on Tuesday that antisemitism runs rampant in campus labor unions, trapping Jews in exploitative and nonconsensual relationships with union bosses who spend their compulsory membership dues on political activities which promote hatred of their identity and the destruction of the Jewish homeland. Some egs: At MIT, “union officers” aided a riotous mob which illegally occupied a section of campus with a “Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” participating in the demonstration and even denying access to campus buildings. UE members at Stanford University, meanwhile, allegedly denied religious accommodations to Jewish students who requested exemption from union dues over that branch’s supporting the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. And Cornell University UE was accused of denying religious exemptions in several cases as well and followed up the rejection with an intrusive “questionnaire” which probed Jewish students for “legally-irrelevant information.”

Northwestern: revelations from president’s closed interview with Congress some weeks back: Northwestern University’s contract with Hamas-allied Qatar, where the school operates a satellite campus, includes a clause that effectively forbids students and faculty from criticizing the Qatari regime. In an echo of Qatar’s penal code, which criminalizes criticism of its government and flag and bans the posting of online content that the Qatari regime deems harmful, a Northwestern Qatar student was “arrested over a tweet,” according to the House interview. Schill confirmed in his House interview that anti-Semitism training offered at Northwestern’s main campus is not offered in Qatar. “I don’t know what the reason would be” for that disparity, Schill said. Since Northwestern opened its Qatar campus in 2008, Schill testified, Qatar has provided the school with $737 million. “Basically 90 percent” of that money “covers direct costs of the Qatar campus,” he said. The rest benefits Northwestern’s U.S. campus. When anti-Israel student radicals pitched tents on campus in violation of school rules last spring, Schill declined to “use force to remove the tents,” he said during the House interview, because Northwestern’s police force was too “tiny” and school administrators feared some encampment participants may have been armed.

Montreal, Canada: article summarizing the many antisemitic incidents just in August

https://thecjn.ca/news/for-montreals-jewish-community-august-was-a-month-marked-by-hate-crimes-and-antisemitic-attacks/

--man dressed in a caftan and keffiyeh headwrap, filming people, as he boldly strolls through the streets threatening Jews: videotaped walking around a heavily Jewish west-end neighbourhood in the Saint-Laurent borough calling Jews and others “fucking pigs,” and “we will kill you,” that he was waiting “for the order of the king … There is one king, Allah.”

--the beating of a Jewish man in front of his children: The man was at a small neighbourhood park with his three daughters. His young girls can be seen in the video clinging to him and screaming in Yiddish. The assailant then stopped hitting the man and walked away, but not before picking up the victim’s kippah from the ground and chucking it into a puddle.

--an attack on Jewish marchers at the Aug. 10 Pride Parade, which until days earlier had banned Jewish groups from participating: On Aug. 10, Montreal police arrested a 35-year-old woman for assault with a weapon, after one or more balloons filled with what appeared to be urine were launched at a group of Jewish marchers at the Montreal Pride Parade.

--Then in the early hours of the morning on Aug. 22 and Aug. 25, a man travelled to the heavily Jewish community of Hampstead and set fire to the Israeli flags flying outside its town hall since October 2023, filming himself in the process and announcing that the flag wherever it would be found must be “reduced to ash.”

--On Aug. 20, a minor was arrested in Montreal for allegedly planning an attack on behalf of the Islamic State (ISIS), the young man had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and was trying to obtain an AK-47 rifle style weapon,

--Also in court next month is the woman seen in another video that went viral, walking around at the November 2024 Quebec student strike making a Nazi salute and threatening Jewish students with “the final solution.”

--October will also see the return to court of other high-profile cases, including that of Mahdi Ahmed Abdirazak, the 22-year-old accused in the overnight shooting at a Montreal Jewish school in November 2023, and of Samy Shaat, arrested for allegedly making threats of bodily harm or death, willfully promoting hatred against an identifiable group, and willfully promoting antisemitism, just days after the October 7 attacks on Israel

Adelphi U: after recently suspending SJP for violating rules, the university rules that a faculty member, who is also a member of Adelphi’s Bias Response Team and faculty appointments committee, created a hostile environment for Jews on campus. In addition to those social media posts specifically cited in Adelphi’s determination, this campaign includes denying the rape of Israeli women on October 7, 2023; blaming the Jewish state for crises such as American homeslessness and budget cuts to the L.A. Fire Department that hurt victims of the L.A. wildfires; promoting conspiracy theories blaming Israel for the United States’ TikTok ban; and describing Israel as the source of “all censorship and attacks on free speech.” Determined that these were not “criticisms of Israel” but attacks on Israel/Israelis.

New York City Schools: giving space to Woke Kindergarten - a program that glorifies “martyrs,” tells children to boycott Israel, and redefines violence as “resistance.” New York City classrooms must be safe havens for learning, not pipelines for hate. This is not rumor or speculation - it is her own announcement, made in her words and images, openly promoted on social media.

San Francisco State U: Professor Rama Ali Kased uses her academic position to promote eliminationist rhetoric, organize BDS activity, and collaborate with extremist networks. The Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) - founded by Kased, an organization actively advancing BDS and lobbying against antisemitism protections in California while leveraging her SFSU affiliation. On August 29, 2025, Professor Kased again used her position as an SFSU professor to spread eliminationist rhetoric at the People’s Conference for Palestine, declaring: “It is not a matter of if, but when Israel falls... From the ashes of this genocide we will build liberation... From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” These are not political opinions; they are calls for the eradication of the Jewish state and a direct assault on the identity and safety of Jewish students. Kased’s conduct is not new. She co-signed the College of Ethnic Studies Chair’s Council Statement on Gaza in December 2023, which formally endorsed BDS and urged CSU-wide boycotts of corporations and academic institutions tied to Israel. In October 2024, she appeared in the “Apartheid-Free Webinar on Divestment” alongside Omar Barghouti, co-founder of the BDS movement. As faculty advisor to Students for Gaza, she backed divestment campaigns on campus. She founded the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC), which has led BDS drives in California and actively lobbied against AB 715, a bill designed to strengthen protections against antisemitism and ensure civil rights compliance in higher education. Rather than supporting legislation to safeguard all vulnerable minority students, she positioned herself as a leading detractor, attempting to derail the bill and preserve the hostile climate that Jewish students already face. By doing so, she aligned her academic title and organizational platform with efforts to block legal protections, compounding the danger for Jewish communities both at SFSU and statewide.

U of Massachusetts Amherst: Ahead of the upcoming Coalition of Women in German (WiG) annual academic conference at the @umass, which plans to exclude and boycott scholars receiving funding from “Israeli institutions,” the Brandeis Center is demanding that university leadership prevent this blatant and illegal national origin discrimination and flagrant violation of UMass policies. The conference, scheduled to be held on the UMass Amherst campus in full partnership with the University, prohibits anyone from relying on financial support from “Israeli institutions” to attend and participate. WiG makes clear that this includes not only funding from Israeli governmental agencies, but “all Israeli academic and cultural institutions.” In order to attend conferences and cover related expenses, though, Israeli scholars — like scholars worldwide — rely on the Israeli International Science Relations Fund, which is administered through Israeli universities.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst, a highly ranked public school, is reviewing an upcoming conference that it plans to host in November after learning that the organizer excludes scholars who receive funding from Israeli institutions.” Amherst would be condoning this vile discrimination if they proceed with hosting conference. Hoping there will be a FU article by end of week stating they have cancelled.

Important new piece by AMCHA’s Tammi Rossman-Benjamin: The Other Antisemitism of “Liberated” Ethnic Studies: AB 715 — a bill that sets basic protections against antisemitism in K–12 curricula, particularly ethnic studies — passed the California Assembly unanimously in June and now heads to a Senate vote. The fiercest opposition comes from the UC Ethnic Studies Faculty Council and other advocates of the “liberated” ethnic studies movement, a narrow, extremist variant of the discipline whose published materials have trafficked in dangerous antisemitic tropes. In a recent Instagram post, the council escalated from policy debate to personal attack, dubbing the bill’s Jewish author the “2025 Top Genocide Denier” and a “Champion of Racism.” The tactic is familiar: deny antisemitism and discredit those who try to address it … Instead of listening, Trustee Gabriel Medina accused speakers of “propaganda” and “manipulative tactics,” claiming they only show up to “tell brown people who they are,” dismissing concerns as “lies,” and mocking emotional testimony. Trustee Joy Flynn invoked antisemitic tropes, referencing “the economic power historically held by the Jewish community.” This reflected a pattern familiar to Jews concerned by growing evidence of antisemitism in ethnic studies: Critics aren’t engaged; they’re smeared as racists or oppressors. That pattern appeared early, during the development of the state’s curriculum. One co-author, Cal State Northridge professor Theresa Montaño, later a founder of the Liberated Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Consortium, responded to Jewish criticism by blaming a “very rich, very wealthy, very well-connected segment of the (Jewish) community” for derailing the curriculum. She claimed it proved “white privilege and white racism” in California. Far from being an unintended consequence, this dynamic is central to how “liberated” ethnic studies operates. The discipline, as promoted by its most vocal advocates, treats disagreement as oppression and uses ideological jargon to punish nonconformity. Every critique becomes proof of the discipline’s necessity, and every dissenter, a villain. To be clear, AB 101 doesn’t mandate a particular version of ethnic studies. But in practice, the approach that embraces antisemitism is the one rapidly gaining ground, because its architects are training the next generation of teachers, and few dare to challenge them.

House Education Committee is probing three medical schools for allegedly failing to address repeated acts of antisemitism that has left Jewish students full of “fear,” The Post has learned. The University of California’s programs in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the University of Illinois College of Medicine have all come under fire for allowing an environment where Jewish students, faculty and patients routinely face hostility, House Education & Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-Mich) wrote in a letter to the deans of the three schools. At UCLA, a mandatory medical school seminar, “Structural Racism and Health Equity,” allegedly featured antisemitic tropes — including describing Jews as “oppressors” and images of “capitalists” with long looked noses.

NYU: A Jewish nurse at New York University (NYU) Hospital at Long Island, is suing the hospital over a series of financial sanctions and harassment she experienced following posts expressing solidarity with Israel after October 7. She was called into a human resources meeting where she was told that using the word “terror” for Hamas could be offensive to Muslims, and was therefore required to change the posts. Days after the October 7 massacre, she posted a post on her private Instagram account with a Star of David and the Hamas symbol, with the caption: “Either you stand with Israel or with terror.” That same day, she also posted a photo of the kidnapped soldier Omer Neutra , who was her high school classmate. She said that the posts were an expression of personal pain for her. The kidnapping of a classmate turned the October 7 attack not only into a national disaster but also into a personal wound. About a month later, she was summoned for a disciplinary meeting with a human resources manager, following an “anonymous complaint.” She said she was shown a screenshot of the post and told that it was “saturated with prejudice and hatred” and that the very use of the word “terror” towards Hamas could be considered an offensive stance towards Muslims

U of CA San Francisco: SJP chapters are hosting a screening of the film “Gaza: Doctors Under Attack” in Cole Hall on the UCSF campus. This film perpetuates false inflammatory information about the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, a modern version of classical antisemitic “blood libel.” Even the BBC, which is well known for its strong criticism of the Israel government and its conduct of the war in Gaza, deemed this documentary extremely biased and non-factual and elected not to air it.

Even more concerning, the event will include a panel led by Dr. Jess Ghannam. Dr. Ghannam was an outspoken supporter of the illegal anti-Israel encampment outside UCSF’s Parnassus Hospital in May 2024, from which genocidal calls against Israel and Jews were chanted and heard by hospitalized Jewish patients. On two occasions, Dr. Ghannam gave a university-wide lecture in which he portrayed Israel as an entirely Arab state draped in the Palestinian flag, essentially erasing the existence of the Jewish nation. Dr. Ghannam also publicly supported the wearing of anti-Israel political symbols (in violation of UCSF policy) in clinical spaces in a NY Times article, dismissing Jewish concerns in his quoted statements. It is staggering that despite these and numerous other examples of behavior that is damaging to Jews and Israelis on campus, Dr. Ghannam is allowed to maintain his affiliated faculty position at the university. To make matters even worse, Dr. Ghannam will be joined on the panel by Dr. Mohammed Subeh, an emergency room physician at El Camino Hospital with no UCSF affiliation. Dr. Subeh has received national attention for his discriminatory and inflammatory social media posts in which he espouses exclusion of “Zionists”. Your institution would never tolerate such hostility towards any religious or ethnic group but continues to allow these proponents of unfettered hate towards Judaism to prosper.

Unbelievable: Antisemitism in the Mental Health world, including that regulators are silent over book “Decolonizing Therapy,” published shortly after Oct 7, that demands that Zionism be treated as a mental illness:

Decolonizing Therapy identifies Zionism--a key component of the Jewish identity--as a root cause of mental illness, despite Zionism’s obvious absence in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Mullan’s book on decolonial therapy features images that equate the Jewish identity with fascism, misogyny, rape culture, and genocidal tendencies (3). … The October 7 attacks and the response of others in the aftermath triggered profound trauma within the Jewish community. Yet instead of being met with compassion and care, many Jews were met with a stunning mix of silence, blame, exclusion, and even outright denial of both the atrocities of October 7 and their grief. These responses came not only from individuals but from institutions and society as a whole. In trauma psychology, this is known as traumatic invalidation--the extreme or repetitive dismissal of individuals’ core experiences, characteristics identified as important aspects of themselves, or reactions to themselves or to the world, particularly by significant people or institutions, such as the mental health practitioner. Decolonizing therapy is a perfect example of traumatic invalidation. It is a pseudo-science that is no more than another tool to deny Jewish identity. This ‘therapy’ compounds trauma under the guise of treatment. It does not heal; it harms (4). 75% of Jewish practitioners have been exposed to antisemitism (5). Since October 7, Jewish clinicians “with Zionist affiliations” have been blacklisted on social media. A Facebook group for Physician Moms removed Jews from the group. A doctor and untenured professor at University of California San Francisco Hospital tweeted that the university should investigate whether a new “Israeli” medical student (a Persian American Jew) committed genocide before coming to UCSF, and professor and the director of counseling at Villanova University taught her students that the “colonized mind” and Zionism are mental illnesses of the frontal lobe alongside fascism, “rape culture” and “genocidal tendencies.” A major mental health organization denied membership to a Jewish affinity group because its members were “privileged white supremacists” (6).

JewBelong: A national campaign is putting up billboards in cities and near major universities this fall to highlight concerns about growing anti-Semitism on campus. The effort, organized by the New York-based nonprofit JewBelong, has been underway for weeks with displays already posted near several NCAA Division I universities. The campaign has so far reached locations near 13 schools, including the University of Florida, Penn State, the University of Michigan, Louisiana State University, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The newest signs are going up near the University of Oklahoma, with more planned in the coming weeks. The signs carry blunt messages such as “Being Jewish shouldn’t require campus security,” and “Jewish students don’t need your pity. Just your spine.” The displays are timed to remain in place through football season, when campuses see the highest visibility.

U of Oregon Law School: In February this year the University of Oregon received a complaint charging unlawful discrimination at the University Oregon Law Review. The Review rejected an article by an Israeli professor—who also teaches in the U.S.—because she is a faculty member at Tel Aviv University.. The editors’ sense of impunity was such that the discriminatory decision was put in writing. When another editor raised the alarm about the legality of the action, a high-ranking member of the law school administration was consulted and then approved the discrimination. Today, six months after the University received the complaint about this discrimination—which allegedly violated a slew of laws and regulations—no known adverse action has been taken against anyone involved, and the high-ranking official is still holding her prominent position at the law school. Moreover, in response to my most recent inquiry, the University’s Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance informed me that the results of the investigation will be kept secret because “The outcome of the process implicates confidential employee information that we are typically prohibited from sharing.” Is that so? In 2016, when the University of Oregon opened an investigation into a blackface episode involving a law school professor (who in fact ineptly advocated for racial equality), the University released the full report of its investigations, issued public condemnations, and publicized its punitive actions against the professor—all while explaining that academic tenure protections prevented her firing. In sharp contrast, the University of Oregon is presently engaged in a pattern of stonewalling and refusals to address complaints of unlawful anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli harassment and discrimination on campus. This may be unsurprising, given that University of Oregon officials are often themselves the perpetrators of such acts. As already noted, a high ranking law school official authorized the discrimination at the University of Oregon Law Review; and this year no less than six university departments and centers joined to invite to campus a speaker who celebrated the October 7 attacks and denies Israel’s right to exist. When a complaint was filed about this officially-organized and sponsored event with an antisemitic speaker who endorses terrorism (when we cut through the speaker’s lip service to respectability), the University appointed an examiner who concluded that there was no reason to even open an investigation. Her conclusion relied on the claim that the Jewish and Israeli students who joined the complaint (and reported being ostracized and harassed in their classrooms and dormitories as a result of the university-created atmosphere on campus)—did not actually attend that speaker’s event … as if that should matter. (Indeed what Jewish or Israeli student would want to attend such event?) In the meantime, examples of unaddressed misdeeds by university officials and others continue to accumulate. Materials celebrating the October 7 attacks and calling for the elimination of the Jewish state are distributed on campus from University-owned and -operated office spaces. One such pamphlet decries efforts aimed at at a two-state solution, echoing the position of the terrorist organization Hamas and call for the violent eradication of Israel, are distributed to students from offices at the University of Oregon’s principal Student Center—despite repeated complaints about the matter.

Four leading Jewish organizations are encouraging university leaders to adopt a new set of recommendations, released on Monday, designed to curb the antisemitism, The guidelines — which call for increased safety measures as well as long-term structural reforms and build upon a four-page set of recommendations released last August — are a joint effort from the Anti-Defamation League, Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Hillel International and Jewish Federations of North America. The recommendations urge university leaders to “consistently enforce” codes of conduct around protests; appoint a coordinator to address Title VI discrimination complaints; reject academic boycotts of Israel; conduct annual student and faculty surveys in regard to campus antisemitism; crackdown on online harassment (in addition to physical safety concerns); and hold faculty accountable for political coercion and identity-based discrimination.

Federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed against pro-Palestinian organizations that alleged they were fronts for the terrorist organization Hamas. In a ruling issued on Friday, found that the plaintiffs who filed the case against the pro-Palestine groups had not sufficiently demonstrated a clear link between the groups and Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.Top of FormBottom of FormTop of FormBottom of Form The plaintiffs in the case—consisting of seven Americans and two Israelis—were all victims of the Hamas attack that killed an estimated 1,200 people, including more than 700 Israeli civilians. They alleged that the pro-Palestinian groups—including National Students for Justice in Palestine, WESPAC Foundation, and Americans for Justice in Palestine Educational Foundation—provided material support to Hamas that directly led to injuries they suffered as a result of the October 7 attack. However, after examining all the evidence presented by the plaintiffs, Alston found they had not proven their claim that the organizations in question provide “ongoing, continuous, systematic, and material support for Hamas and its affiliates.”

National Education Assn (largest teachers union): last month voted to cut ties with ADL (got overturned), but The NEA has cultivated close ties with a teachers’ union in the West Bank whose leader has expressed support for terrorists. In fact, the NEA has even sent the group funds billed as humanitarian aid, even though the leader of that union has celebrated terrorists as martyrs and met with a top official from a U.S.-designated terror group. What deserves more attention is the relationship between the NEA and the General Union of Palestinian Teachers (GUPT). At least, one GUPT leader isn’t shy about his support for terror. GUPT general secretary Saed Erziqat posted on social media that they should be honored as “martyrs” and called for “continuous escalation” by Palestinians. Erziqat also revealed that he traveled to Syria to meet Talal Naji, the secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, another U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization. Erziqat supports the boycott, sanctions and divestment campaign against Israel. On Dec. 6, 2023, just shy of two months after the massacre in southern Israel on Oct. 7, an NEA executive launched a GoFundMe campaign to benefit Education International’s “Solidarity Fund for Gaza.” It raised $5,902 for the fund. The GoFundMe campaign indicates that EI will distribute the funds to its Palestinian affiliates, a trio of unions that includes GUPT. Under federal law, it is a criminal offense to knowingly provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. As noted, the GUPT general secretary supports terrorist acts committed by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

UCLA: A court ruled Thursday that UC Regent Jay Sures must pay $150,624 of graduate student Dylan Kupsh’s legal fees after Sures unsuccessfully attempted to file a restraining order against him. Kupsh – along with around 50 other pro-Palestine protesters – demonstrated outside Sures’ Brentwood home in February, calling him “responsible for protecting UC investments in genocide and weapons manufacturing.” Lawyers representing Sures initially alleged that Kupsh was a “ringleader” among the protesters, but were unable to prove the claim in court. Stephen Fraser, a lawyer representing Sures, said the original lawsuit was an attempt to prevent Kupsh from returning to demonstrate outside Sures’ home. Protesters in February left red handprints on Sures’ garage and caution tape in his yard, and held a banner that read “Jonathan Sures you will pay, until you see your final day.”

UCLA suspended Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA and Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA – two student groups that attended the protest – a week after the incident. Chancellor Julio Frenk said in a campuswide email announcing the suspensions that members of SJP and Graduate SJP harassed Sures, prevented one of his family members from exiting their home and vandalized the area.

Canada: the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) passed a resolution to create a resource on “Anti-Palestinian Racism” (APR) for every teacher in the province – basically turning any criticism of Palestinians (ie terrorism) into ‘racism.’ This dangerous political framework has been used to brand core expressions of Jewish identity, including connection to Israel, as racism. The promulgation of APR within Ontario’s schools risks the further politicization of our classrooms, making Jewish students and teachers feel that they must hide their heritage, culture, and history to be accepted. Further, it treats Jewish concerns about bias as attempts to “deny” someone else’s narrative, creating hostility by pitting two marginalized groups against each other. [in short: the thing they constantly falsely accuse Jews of – ‘weaponizing antisemitism to stop criticism of Israel’ – they are doing openly and explicitly]

U of Washington: More than 30 anti-Israel demonstrators who occupied a University of Washington engineering building at the end of the spring semester —- causing more than $1 million worth of damage — are now being investigated by the university and local attorney’s office for potential criminal charges, Jewish Insider has learned.

The investigation comes after a recent report put a spotlight on a link between the radical student group that led the takeover and the U.S. designated terrorist group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. “We have taken this incident very seriously, including having issued emergency suspensions for all students who were arrested in the building and working with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on potential criminal charges,” a University of Washington spokesperson told JI on Wednesday, referring to the demonstration in May in which masked demonstrators blocked entrances and exits to the building and ignited fires in two dumpsters on a street outside.

A recent letter to Congress accuses the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) union of promoting anti-Semitism on college campuses. The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation sent the letter to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce on July 30, alleging that the UE and its affiliates have created hostile environments for Jewish graduate students at universities including MIT, Stanford, and Cornell. The letter asserts the union supports the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel and uses compulsory dues to fund its activities. At MIT, following the October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel, the UE affiliate supported campus protests favoring Hamas, the letter states. Five Jewish graduate students requested religious accommodations to avoid paying dues to the union, citing conflicts with their faith. At Stanford, three graduate students faced similar challenges. Their requests for accommodations were met with what the letter calls an “abusive” questionnaire, which the union dropped after legal pressure. At Cornell, Jewish students also faced repeated questionnaires and hostile communications, prompting some to file complaints, the letter contends.

Canada: McGill U: Four unions at McGill University say the school is attacking free speech by trying to cut off funding for a student organization because of its support for a pro-Palestinian group. In January, McGill sent a notice of default to the Quebec Public Interest Research Group at McGill (QPIRG), a student-run organization focused on social and environmental justice. The letter demanded that the group stop providing support and resources to Students for Palestine’s Honour and Resistance, known as SPHR. The pro-Palestinian organization was one of the groups that started a months-long encampment on the university’s downtown campus last year. It is listed as one of QPIRG’s working groups, meaning it receives financial support from the organization and has access to its resources, including computers and meeting space. SPHR has “promoted intimidation, harassment, and protest activities that have resulted in vandalism and violence on our campus,” wrote Angela Campbell, McGill’s interim deputy provost of student life and learning, in the January letter. “SPHR has demonstrated itself as unable to distinguish between legitimate political advocacy that respects the rule of law and acts that breach the law and institutional policies.” The university moved to end its memorandum of agreement with QPIRG in May, which would cut off the vast majority of the group’s funding,

Philadelphia: yet ANOTHER lawsuit against a school district: FAMILIES FORCED TO FLEE PHILLY DUE TO OVERT HOSTILITY UNLEASHED TOWARDS JEWISH STUDENTS WHO ENTERED A MUSLIM-ONLY PRAYER SPACE MAINTAINED BY A PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOL: On behalf of aggrieved families who were forced to flee the School District of Philadelphia because of the death threats and harassment directed at their school age children because they had entered what is maintained as a Muslim only Prayer space by a Philadelphia public school, The Deborah Project has filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming violations of both Constitutional and statutory rights and duties they were owed. “Parents of children who were repeatedly threatened by other students and whose names and social media accounts were shared with the entire world by others, including teachers, were terrified,” said Lori Lowenthal Marcus of The Deborah Project.“ The response of the Philadelphia School District was to ignore the parents’ pleas for safety and instead fan the flames of hostility directed at the three boys.” And what had the Plaintiff students done wrong? They entered what is labeled the “Quiet Room,” but which they found out was—by binding school policy—restricted to Muslims only. They were charged with and determined by the District to have committed harassment when the only thing the girls in the room said happened was that the boys entered the room during “girls time,” spoke Hebrew, and that one claimed to be a proud Zionist. But the rumors that spread were that the Boys yelled that they “hate Muslims,” performed “sexual activity on prayer rugs,” “pulled off the hijabs of Muslim girls,” and that they had “trashed the Prayer Room.”

U of Pennsylvania: Penn renames major building as another major donor to the University of Pennsylvania yanked his support from the Ivy League institution over antisemitism concerns. Donor Stephen Levin is no longer making donations toward his $15 million pledge for naming rights to the Neural and Behavioral Sciences Building, the Daily Pennsylvanian reported. Although he yanked his support in November 2023, it is coming to light this week with the student newspaper article. “Penn has quietly removed the name of 1967 College graduate Stephen Levin from the behavioral sciences building he previously endowed after the longtime University donor halted his contributions over the administration’s handling of antisemitism on campus,” the newspaper reported Wednesday.

According to a letter obtained by the Daily Pennsylvanian, Levin had told former President Liz Magill: “Today Penn is far from the University I attended, along with my father and two of my sons.” “Furthermore, I want my name removed from the building and no longer want to be associated with Penn. Penn is an embarrassment not only to the Jewish community but also has lost its luster as a superb Ivy league school.” Levin told the student newspaper he never received a response from Magill.

Harvard: Mathias Risse, who runs the Harvard Carr Center for Human Rights, had a noteworthy academic year. Here are some of his accomplishments: • Interviewed Francesca Albanese — more accurately, provided her a platform to spread inflammatory claims, including that Israel had no right to self-defense after October 7th. • Interviewed Muhammad Shehada, whose organization, Euro-Med, has been linked to Hamas. Shehada has routinely vilified Israel and this week blamed Israel for the starvation of hostage Evyatar David. • Hosted a Palestinian guest speaker who laughed at an elderly Israeli female hostage. • Appears to have given a job offer to an anti-Israel propagandist, before his KSG bosses overruled him for not following the “vetting process.” • Wrote in The Crimson: “There is no justification for the large-scale attacks on Gaza.” • Co-sponsored an event with experts from Addammeer, later sanctioned by the US Dept of Treasury for being a “sham charity” with ties to Hamas and PFLP. • Interviewed prominent anti-Zionist Peter Beinart. Twice. During one of these interviews, Risse laughed at how Jews control the antisemitism industry. • Penned an op-ed defending the use of antisemitic chants, claiming that “slogans like “from the river to the sea” mean different things to different people, and legitimately so.” To quote

@DaraHorn ... yes and ‘Sieg Heil’ just means ‘Hail Victory’ to some people. • And last, but not least, authored an article dismissing the idea that antisemitism exists at Harvard (notably, he is neither Jewish nor a scholar of antisemitism).

A California school district which stands accused of refusing to address antisemitism has ruled that a teacher who allegedly showed her students antisemitic, discriminatory, and biased content violated policy when she screened an offensive video about the Holocaust in her classroom. The move, taken by the Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD), came without the prompting of the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, with which two Jewish civil rights groups, StandWithUs (SWU) and the Bay Area Jewish Coalition (BAJC), filed a complaint against the district in April. Among other things, SWU and BAJC alleged that an SCUSD employee, Wilcox High School teacher Kauser Adenwala, screened a documentary produced in Turkey which compared the war in Gaza to the Holocaust. The graphic film at one point “displays a picture of a young Jewish child who was branded with a number by the Nazis during World War II and then suddenly shows an untraceable image of children with Arabic writing on their arms”

Dozens of US professors have become increasingly involved in a Turkish think tank founded by a former academic sentenced to prison for conspiring with terror groups, the Center for Islam and Global Affairs. The center was founded by Sami al-Arian, a former professor at the University of South Florida. In 2006, Al-Arian was sentenced to prison in the U.S. for 57 months after being found guilty of conspiring to aid terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad. He was then deported. Academics have continued to participate in CIGA events despite the fact that the think tank has hosted senior leaders of Hamas and officials connected to other terror groups such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Some egs: In the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, Ohio State University law Professor John Quigley (pictured bottom) and Columbia University Professor Joseph Massad (pictured left) also hosted a CIGA panel on the “future of Zionism after the al-Aqsa flood.” Shortly after the attacks on Israel, Massad called them a “stunning victory.” Further, al-Arian hosted a “CIGA Ramadan” series in 2021 featuring Princeton Professor Richard Falk and Georgetown Professor Nader Hashemi. Both Falk and Hashemi have previously faced criticism for their pro-Hamas activism.

FBI releases hate crime stats for 2024 and it’s bad: The FBI tracked 1,938 reported incidents of single-bias anti-Jewish hate crimes in 2024. This marks a 5.8% increase from 2023 and is the highest number ever recorded by the FBI since it began collecting data in 1991. Though Jews just make up about 2% of the U.S. population, they were the target of nearly 70% of all reported religion-based hate crimes in 2024, comprising roughly 1-in-6 of all reported hate crimes. Antisemitism and extremism are rising in the United States. And 2024 FBI data doesn’t show the full picture, with many incidents going unreported.

Dutch Holocaust scholar fears retribution, assault, and dismissal for standing up for Jewish students: Kluveld, a longtime critic of on-campus anti-Israel groups, told JNS in an interview that her attempt to film an antisemitic protest outside a classroom has apparently led to a concerted effort to push her out. Determined to document the event—which the researcher said involved sirens, drums and a megaphone, violating university rules prohibiting the disruption of educational activities—Kluveld began filming the rally. However, when Kluveld recorded the scene, the institute’s integral safety coordinator approached her alongside a demonstrator who demanded she immediately stop filming and delete the footage from her phone. She refused. “They also started chanting at me through that megaphone, coming very close to me, like 20 centimeters [8 inches] away. And they had a flag, poking me with it, letting it touch my head,” she said, adding: “But I simply didn’t leave and stood my ground.” Since then, Kluveld has faced more harassment from students and staff and was summoned by her employer for mediation, which she believes could be a “gentle form of euthanasia” ahead of her possible dismissal. “Now the claim has been made that no one at the faculty wants to work with me or has trust in me,” she said. “They’re never going to give me that trust because they never want to admit that they were wrong.”

More details from the post: “We [CUAD] disrupt, and we are not afraid to claim and embrace that very nature of our actions... A wrench must be thrown into this machine [Columbia University], by any means necessary.” “[T]he resistance humiliates the zionist state, as seen when the Al-Aqsa Flood breached the separation wall between Gaza and the rest of occupied Palestine.” “[W]e will never condemn armed resistance.” “Hamas spokesperson Abu Obeida... highlighted the breadth of the resistance.” “We will continue to support and justify resistance in all its forms until Palestine is free and the world is liberated from the chokehold of imperialism. Disruption until divestment, and revolution until victory.” “As [a course associate] prepares for another semester of teaching, we must continue to disrupt business as usual...” “May the courage and perseverance of the resistance serve as an inspiration to us all. We must continue the struggle in unwavering solidarity. Glory to the resistance!”

Williams College: A Williams College student charged in a commencement day vandalism incident is asking Northern Berkshire District Court to agree to a community service plan. Liam Carey, 20, of Virginia, is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Aug. 11, to answer to charges of vandalism, destruction of property less than $1,200, resisting arrest and trespass arising from the June 8 incident. Williamstown Police responded to the scene near the commencement grounds at about 7 a.m. to find that Carey had removed the American flag from a college-owned flag pole and replaced it with a Palestine flag. College officials told police that Carey had smashed a security box, cut a rope and tied one end of a rope on the flag pole to his wrist, according to an affidavit from Officer Brad Sacco.

Police also saw graffiti on nearby granite slabs at the entrance to the Williams Quad and on the stone pathway to Chapin Hall quad. The graffiti included statements like “They Killed our Childhood,” “Queer as in Free Palestine,” “[Explitive] All Colonizers” and “Williams Funds Genocide,” the affidavit reads.

Federal judge rules that attacks on the Star of David are a form of racial harassment: On Monday, a federal judge wrote that targeting the Star of David is “as racially motivated as the highly offensive racial slur, [the N-word],” while granting protection to a Jewish activist who was allegedly choked when an aggressor yanked an Israeli flag from around her neck. The ruling — which could be a watershed moment for the American Jewish community — appears to be the first successful use of an 1866 Civil Rights Act provision to address post-October 7 antisemitic violence. The United States District Court for the District of Columbia issued the preliminary injunction on August 4, 2025 in favor of Kimmara Sumrall, a Zionist activist, against Janine Ali, a member of the anti-Israel group CODEPINK. In a decision that could reshape how courts address antisemitic attacks, the judge found that “The Star of David—emblazoned upon the Israeli flag—symbolizes the Jewish race” and that Sumrall was likely to succeed in her lawsuit alleging racially motivated assault. The court issued a stay-away order requiring Ali to maintain at least three yards distance from Sumrall in public and prohibiting all contact, after finding that the attack constituted “direct evidence of racial discrimination.”

-- According to court documents, Sumrall was wearing an Israeli flag tied around her neck as a cape when Ali allegedly approached from behind and yanked it, causing Sumrall to be choked and her head jerked backward. The court’s most significant finding centered on the symbolic and racial significance of the attack. Rejecting Ali’s argument that her actions were merely “anti-Israel” rather than antisemitic—which the judge called “quite a stretch”—the court established that targeting Jewish symbols constitutes racial discrimination at the highest level of offensiveness.

Columbia: anti-Israel prof Rashid Khalidi has announced he will no longer teach his signature fall course at Columbia, citing the university’s “capitulation” to the Trump administration. ➤ In an open letter published by The Guardian, Khalidi says the deal with Trump officials effectively criminalizes criticism of Israel and makes it impossible to teach honestly about the Middle East. “The IHRA definition deliberately, mendaciously and disingenuously conflates Jewishness with Israel, so that any criticism of Israel, or indeed description of Israeli policies, becomes a criticism of Jews.” ➤ Columbia has agreed to let an outside “compliance monitor” access faculty, classrooms, and disciplinary proceedings—measures Khalidi says transform the university into an “anti-university.” ➤ “The teaching, syllabi and scholarship of some of the most prominent academics… will be vetted by political appointees and outside firms,” he writes, calling it a “shameful capitulation.” Khalidi will instead launch a public lecture series on modern Middle East history, with proceeds going to Gaza’s destroyed universities.
